ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Alcohol myopia

Imagine you are at a party and you've had too much to drink. Everything around you seems fuzzy and you can't think straight. This is because alcohol affects the way your brain works. Alcohol myopia is when alcohol makes you focus on only the most immediate and noticeable thing in a situation, while ignoring everything else around you.

Think of it like looking through a straw. When you drink too much alcohol, your brain can only focus on what is at the very end of the straw, like your feelings or immediate surroundings, and ignores everything else, like the potential consequences of your actions or the feelings of others.

This can make you act impulsively and make bad decisions without thinking things through. For example, you may decide to drink and drive because you're only thinking about how much fun you're having at the party, and don't think about how dangerous it is to drive under the influence.

So, alcohol myopia is when alcohol makes you focus narrowly on your immediate surroundings and feelings, while ignoring the bigger picture and potential consequences of your actions.
