ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

All fifths

Okay kiddo, let's talk about music! You know how there are different notes like A, B, C, and so on, right? Well, in music, we can also talk about something called intervals.

An interval is just the distance between two notes. One type of interval is called a fifth. To understand what a fifth is, we first have to start at a note (let's say C) and count up five notes. So, we go C, D, E, F, G. G is the fifth note from C, so we say that G is a fifth above C.

Now, here's where things get interesting. If we want to find the next fifth from G, we start at that note (G) and count up five notes: G, A, B, C, D. So, D is a fifth above G.

We can keep doing this over and over again, finding the next fifth from the note we just ended on. This creates a pattern that looks like this: C, G, D, A, E, B, F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, F, and so on.

This pattern is called the Circle of Fifths, and it's really useful in music because it helps us understand how different notes and chords relate to each other. It's like a musical map that can guide us through different keys and harmonies.

So, that's all fifths in a nutshell, kiddo. It may seem a little complicated at first, but with practice and patience, you'll soon be able to use the Circle of Fifths like a pro!
