ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

All-pass filter

An all-pass filter is like a magic wand that can change the way a signal sounds without changing its volume. Imagine you are singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and it sounds a little too high-pitched. An all-pass filter can make your voice sound lower-pitched without making it quieter.

An all-pass filter works by delaying some parts of the sound wave while speeding up others. Imagine if you were running a race and your friend was right behind you. You could slow down a little bit to let your friend catch up, but then you could run really fast to get ahead of them again. This is kind of like what an all-pass filter does to the sound wave.

When the sound wave gets delayed, it changes the timing between different frequencies (or pitches) in the wave. This can create a different and sometimes more interesting sound, like an echo or a reverberation. This effect is used in music and audio in many different ways, from adding more depth to a guitar solo to creating a spooky sound effect in a horror movie.

So basically, an all-pass filter does magic things to sound waves to make them sound different without changing how loud they are. Cool, right?
