ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Amphiboly

Amphiboly is when a sentence can be interpreted in more than one way because the words are arranged in a tricky way. It's like a puzzle that can have more than one answer depending on how you look at it.

For example, if someone tells you "I saw a man on the hill with a telescope," you might think the man had a telescope. But if the sentence was "I saw a man on the hill, with a telescope," you might think the speaker had a telescope and saw the man on the hill. The comma changes the meaning of the sentence!

Amphiboly can be fun because it makes you think about language in a new way, but it can also be confusing if people don't realize that the sentence can be interpreted in more than one way. So it's important to be clear in your communication and double-check if you're not sure what someone means!
