ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Anacoluthon

An anacoluthon is when someone is talking or writing and suddenly changes their mind about what they want to say. It's like when you're telling a story and you start talking about one thing but then halfway through, you remember something else and start talking about that instead.

For example, imagine you were trying to tell someone about a funny dream you had but instead of sticking to the story you kept going off on weird tangents. You might say something like, "So I was in this big castle and it was really dark and then suddenly I realized I was wearing one pink sock and one blue sock — wait, no, that's not what happened. Okay, so I was in the castle and there was a dragon guarding the door..."

An anacoluthon can be confusing because it makes it hard to follow what the person is trying to say. It's important to try and stay focused on the main idea even if the person talking keeps changing their mind or telling unrelated stories.
