ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Angle of sideslip

When you are in a plane or a car, you can imagine that the direction or the path you are moving is like a line. Now, there are three directions or axis, one is up and down, the other is right and left, and the third is forward and backward.

Angle of sideslip is basically the angle that the line or the path you are moving makes with the side axis of the plane or car.
It's like if you were standing on the side of the road and saw a car driving past you. The angle the car makes with the road is the angle of sideslip.

This angle becomes important when the plane or car is flying or driving in windy conditions because the wind can push it sideways. So if the plane or car is not pointing straight into the wind, it means that it is not moving straight ahead, but a little bit sideways.

This may not always be a good thing because it can affect the flight or drive stability and make it harder to control. So pilots and drivers have to be aware of the angle of sideslip and make adjustments to the plane or car to keep it moving straight ahead.
