ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Animal tooth development

Animals grow teeth when they are babies. Teeth usually start to come in when babies are between 6 to 8 months old. The first set of teeth that babies get are called 'baby teeth'. They have sharp edges and are very important for babies to be able to chew food and help their mouth make sounds. Over time as the baby grows, their adult teeth will replace their baby teeth and come in. Adult teeth usually come in when the baby is 6-7 years old. They have bigger and more rounded edges compared to baby teeth. Adult teeth are needed to chew food, help keep your mouth healthy, and give you a nice smile.
