Apartheid was a system of laws in South Africa that kept different races apart. They were made by the white people, who were in power in South Africa. These laws said that white people and black people had to use separate places like parks, restaurants and bathrooms. Blacks also had to live in special areas called “Homelands”. They were not allowed to vote and they were given less money and education than white people. This went on until 1994, when Nelson Mandela became the first president of a free South Africa. He worked to build an equality for all people in South Africa.
