Civil rights movement

The civil rights movement was a time in history when people in the United States who were not white worked together to make changes in the law so that everyone could have the same rights, no matter what color their skin was. They wanted everyone, no matter who they were, to have the same rights, like going to school together, eating in the same places, and voting in elections. They held protests, sit-ins and marches to show people their wishes—that everybody should be treated fairly and equally.
