Chicano Movement

The Chicano Movement was a period in history when people of Mexican heritage, who lived in the United States, worked together to get better rights and more political power. These people were known as Chicanos, and they wanted to be able to speak Spanish and practice their culture in a country that often wanted them to completely ignore who they were and where they came from. Chicanos (and some non-Chicanos) fought to get better education, better jobs, and eliminate discrimination against them. They also worked to get laws changed so that their civil rights (rights belonging to everyone) were better protected. The Chicano Movement was important because it helped give Chicanos more power in their communities so that their voices could be heard.
