ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Appeal to consequences

Appeal to consequences means to try to get people to agree with you by pointing out the bad things that can happen if they don't. For example, if your teacher asked everyone to hand in their homework by the end of the week, and you know you won't have it done, you might try to appeal to consequences by saying something like "if I don't turn it in, I could get a bad grade and that could ruin my whole school year!" Here, you are trying to get your teacher to make an exception for you by pointing out the consequences if you don't turn in your work.
