ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Applause

When we really like something that we hear or see, we use our hands to make loud sounds that are called 'applause.' This is like clapping for our friends when they do a good job. We do it to show that we enjoy what we are hearing or seeing and to let the people who made it know that we appreciate their hard work. Applause also helps us communicate with the performers on stage that we have enjoyed their performance, and it makes them feel happy and proud. You can even try it yourself by clapping your hands together right now- that is what applause sounds like!
