Aquatic organism passage is all about helping our fishy friends move around their homes in rivers, lakes, and oceans where they live! Just like we walk on the ground or move on roads, fish often have to move upstream, downstream or even between waterways. But sometimes, this can be tough for them because humans have built things like dams, culverts and bridges to get around rivers and lakes. These structures can make it difficult for the fish to get where they need to go because they are kind of like big walls that are hard to get over, under or through.
So, what we do with aquatic organism passage is create specialized structures that help fish move through and around these obstacles. For example, we might build a ladder that allows fish to swim over a dam or put in pipes under roads and highways that allow fish to swim through safely. Sometimes we even create special habitats like pools or shallow water areas to help the fish take a break and rest during their journey.
By doing all of these things, we are helping our fishy friends get to the places they need to go so they can lay their eggs, eat their food, and live their lives happily!
