ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Asylum seeker

Imagine that you are playing with your friends in the park and suddenly if somebody scares you or if you feel like you are in danger, you run to your mother to get some help and feel safe.

Asylum seekers are people who are like you, but instead of just being scared for a little bit, they are scared for a long time or their whole life. Many people in their own countries are not safe because of things like war, violence, or persecution, which means they are treated badly just for being who they are. So they have to leave their homes and run away to another country, just like you run to your mother in the park. They hope to find a new safe place where they can live without being scared all the time.

Sometimes, they arrive at the new country and ask the government for help so that they can stay there and not have to go back to their dangerous home country. This is called "seeking asylum." Just like how your mother would try to help you feel safe, the new country will try to help the asylum seeker feel safe too.
