The atmosphere of Earth is like a big, invisible 'blanket' that helps make our planet warm enough for us to live in. It is made mostly of nitrogen and oxygen and it holds in heat from the Sun like a huge, moving blanket. Without it, Earth's temperature would be too cold for us to survive. The atmosphere of Earth also helps to filter out some of the sun's harmful radiation and it holds moisture (water) that falls back to the Earth as rain.
