Auschwitz bombing debate

During the Second World War, the German Nazis set up concentration camps where they imprisoned and killed people they didn't like. One of the most infamous of these camps was Auschwitz, where over a million people were murdered, mostly Jews.

Some people wonder why the Allies, who were fighting against Germany, didn't bomb these camps or try to destroy them from the air. This is called the Auschwitz bombing debate.

The answer is that it was very difficult to do so. For one thing, the camps were located in a remote area of Poland, which was then under German control. This meant that there were no nearby air bases that Allied planes could fly from.

Even if they did have access to air bases, bombing the camps would have been very risky. The Nazis had built anti-aircraft guns around the camps to protect them from bombing.

Another problem was that the Allies couldn't be sure that bombing the camps would actually help the people inside. Bombing could cause even more destruction and death, and might not even destroy the gas chambers where people were being killed.

Overall, while the Allies wanted to stop the Nazis from committing atrocities like those at Auschwitz, bombing the camps was not a practical or effective option.
