ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Australian Competition & Consumer Commission

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) is like a big superhero that helps make sure that businesses in Australia play fair and treat everyone nicely.

You know how when you want to buy something, you go to a store and pick the one you want? The ACCC makes sure that the store doesn't cheat you or lie to you about the thing you want to buy. They also make sure that the store doesn't try to trick or hurt other stores by doing mean things.

The ACCC works hard to keep all businesses playing by the rules. They have lots of special powers to make sure that nobody takes advantage of you or your family. They have the power to tell a business to stop being mean or unfair, and they can even give them a big punishment if they keep being bad.

The ACCC also helps to protect kids. They know that some things that may seem like toys are actually very dangerous. So, they make sure that toy stores only sell toys that are safe for kids to play with. They also make sure that you and your family are able to use the things you buy for a long time. They don't want you to waste your money on something that breaks easily.

Sometimes, the ACCC even helps to stop big businesses from becoming too powerful and making all the rules. They want to make sure that all businesses, big and small, have a fair chance to compete and make things better for you.

If you ever see a business doing something that doesn't seem right or makes you feel sad, you can tell the ACCC. They are always ready to help you and make things right.
