ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bacterium

Alright kiddo, have you ever heard of tiny living things called bacteria? They're so small that you can't see them without a special tool called a microscope. Bacteria are everywhere around us, on our skin, in our mouths, in the soil, and even floating in the air.

Bacteria are actually single-celled organisms which means that they are made up of only one cell. This cell is like a tiny room where the bacterium lives and does all its work. In this room, there are different parts like the cell wall, the cell membrane, and the DNA. These parts help the bacterium survive and do its job.

Now, bacteria can be either good or bad. Some of them can make us sick, while others help us in many ways. Some bacteria can help us digest our food, some can make vitamins, and others can even help us fight off other bad bacteria.

Now, here's a fun fact for you - bacteria are some of the oldest living things on earth! They've been around for billions of years and have adapted in many different ways to survive and thrive in different environments.

So kiddo, now you know that bacteria are tiny living things that are all around us, and some are good while others are not so good. But don't worry, our body knows how to protect us from the bad bacteria, so you just keep washing your hands and staying healthy!
