Balinese caste system

Okay, so you know how everyone is special and different in their own way? In Bali, they have a way of dividing people into groups based on their jobs, skills and family background. This is called the caste system.

Imagine all the jobs in your community written on little pieces of paper, then someone picks them out of a hat and decides who gets to do what job. So maybe someone gets the job of being a farmer, someone else gets to be a priest, and someone else gets to be a blacksmith, and so on.

This system has been around for a long time in Bali, and it's based on the idea that each caste has its own role and responsibilities. The highest caste is the priests, who are considered very important because they perform the religious ceremonies and rituals. There are also the merchants and artisans who make beautiful things and the farmers who grow food for everyone.

People in different castes are not supposed to marry or even socialize with people of other castes. This means that you mostly hang out with people who are very similar to you in terms of job and family background.

Now, it's important to remember that Bali is a diverse place with many different beliefs and ideas. While the caste system is still in place in some parts of Bali, many people are challenging it and working to create a more equal society where everyone has the same opportunities, regardless of their caste.
