A bascule bridge is a bridge that can open like a door. It has two parts that open up to let boats and ships pass by, while still allowing cars and pedestrians to cross. It is like a regular bridge, except it moves up and down. The two parts that make up the bridge are called the leaves. The leaves are connected to tall towers, called piers, which rest on the water or ground. The leaves are lifted up or down by big motors, which turn a gear that helps the leaves open and close. When the leaves are opened, a big gap is created in the middle so boats can pass through. The leaves are moved using electricity, and the bridge is usually controlled remotely from a control room. This makes it easier to open the bridge so ships can pass by.
