Battenburg markings

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a car with yellow and black stripes on it? Those stripes are called battenburg markings. Battenburg markings are a special pattern that is put on emergency vehicles like police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks.

The purpose of battenburg markings is to make the emergency vehicles more visible to other drivers on the road. When drivers see the bright yellow and black stripes, they know that they need to be extra careful and make way for the emergency vehicle.

The stripes are put on the vehicles in a specific pattern. They are made up of two thick yellow blocks and two thick black blocks, arranged in an alternating pattern. The blocks are always vertical and never horizontal. This special pattern is called a battenburg pattern, which is where the name comes from.

So, the next time you see a police car, ambulance or fire truck with those bright yellow and black stripes, remember that they are there to keep everyone safe on the road!
