ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Baudrillard

Okay kiddo, picture this - you know how you play make-believe and pretend to be different things? Well, there's a man named Jean Baudrillard who also likes to play a game where he pretends that things aren't real.

He thinks that in our world, we've created so many things like TV shows, advertisements, and even our own identities that we've kind of lost touch with what's really real. It's like we're living in a world of make-believe.

Baudrillard talks about something called "simulation" which means that we're pretending so much that it's hard to tell what's real and what's not. For example, think about video games - the characters and settings aren't real but we can get so into the game that it feels like we're actually there.

He also talks about "hyperreality" which means that things can be so exaggerated and over-the-top that they don't even resemble the real thing anymore. Like when you see a cartoon of a person with a huge head that's not what people really look like but it's still fun to look at.

So, Baudrillard likes to pretend that we're living in a world of make-believe where it's hard to tell what's real and what's not. It might sound confusing but it's fun to think about how we can create our own realities in our heads. Just remember to always know the difference between what's real and what's not in the real world!
