The Bengal Famine of 1943 was a terrible disaster that happened during the Second World War. It was the result of a combination of things. First, there were crop failures in parts of Bengal; this means that the amount of food grown on farms was much less than expected. Second, shipping of food was interrupted because of the war; this means that it became difficult to get food from one place to another, even if there was food in one place, it couldn't be sent to the people who needed it. Third, wartime rationing was in effect; this means that people weren't allowed to have as much food as they used to. All of these things combined caused a lot of people in Bengal to not have enough food to eat, and many died from hunger and illness.
