ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Biomass (energy)

Biomass is energy that we can get from things that used to be alive, like plants and trees. When these things are alive, they use the sun's energy to grow and stay alive. But when they die or we cut them down, we can use them to make energy for ourselves.

We take the dead plants and trees, and we burn them to release their stored energy. When we burn them, we create heat, which can be used to make electricity. This is kind of like how we use coal or oil to make energy, but with biomass we're using things that are much easier to find and don't give off as much air pollution.

Another way we can use biomass is by turning it into something called ethanol, which is kind of like fuel for our cars. We can do this by taking the plants and trees and breaking them down into small pieces. Then we add some special bacteria or enzymes that help turn the pieces into ethanol.

Overall, biomass is a really cool way that we can get energy from things that we used to think were just garbage. It's good for the environment, and it's a nice way to use something that we would have just thrown away otherwise.
