ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Boomerang effect (psychology)

The boomerang effect is when trying to get someone to do what you want, you actually make it more likely that they will NOT do what you want. It happens because when we don't like someone telling us what to do, it can make us resistant and make us want to do the opposite. For example, if your parents tell you to clean your room and you don’t want to, you might end up not cleaning it. The boomerang effect is like throwing a boomerang into the air and it coming back to you. Even though you tried to make someone do something, it ended up not happening.
