ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Buddhist modernism

Buddhist modernism is like a new way of understanding Buddhism that’s happening in our world today. Some grown-ups might think that Buddhism is all about ancient traditions and old teachings, but Buddhist modernism means that some people are finding new ways to practice Buddhism and make it more relevant to their lives today.

It's like when we play a game, we might change the rules a little bit to make it more exciting or fit better with who is playing. That's what some grown-ups are doing with Buddhism.

Some people want to practice mindfulness, meditation and compassion in ways that are more suited to their busy, modern lives. They might use technology, social media, and new techniques to help them practice Buddhism in ways that work for them.

However, there are different opinions on whether this is a good idea as it can change the original teachings of Buddhism. But, just like a game of tag, people can still choose to play with the original rules or with some new rules that work better for them. It's all about finding what helps us live happier and more peaceful lives.
