ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Business method patent

Okay kiddo, let me explain what a business method patent is.

You know how sometimes when grown-ups come up with a really cool new idea, they want to protect it so nobody else can copy it? Well, sometimes those ideas are about how to do business in a certain way.

A business method patent is like a special permission slip from the government that says, "This way of doing business is so unique and useful that nobody else can use it without permission."

For example, imagine a grown-up came up with a way for people to buy things online without having to use a credit card. That kind of idea might be so clever and different that the grown-up could apply for a business method patent.

If they get their patent approved, nobody else can use their way of doing business without getting permission and maybe paying some money. So, this way the grown-up can protect their idea and hopefully make some money from it.

Does that make sense to you, champ?
