ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Calendrical calculation

Calendrical calculation is like playing a game with numbers! Let's pretend you have a big book with 365 pages, and each page has a date on it like January 1st, January 2nd, and so on. This book is your calendar!

Now, let's say you want to know what day of the week your birthday is going to be on this year. You can use some special tricks to figure it out!

First, you need to know some facts about a regular year. A regular year has 365 days, and every week has 7 days. This means that if you divide 365 by 7, you get 52 weeks and 1 day left over. That one day is what we call a "remainder."

Next, you need to know that the days of the week have special names. They are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. These names always follow each other in the same order!

Now, you can start playing the game! Let's say your birthday is on February 22nd, which is the 53rd day of the year.

To figure out what day it falls on, you first need to figure out what day January 1st fell on this year. You can count the days from January 1st to February 22nd to find out that it's 22 days.

Now you can divide 22 by 7 to get 3 weeks and a remainder of 1. This means that February 22nd is on the same day of the week as January 1st plus 1 day. So if January 1st was a Tuesday, February 22nd will be on a Wednesday!

You can use this trick for any date in the calendar year. It's like a really cool puzzle!
