Chain pump

A chain pump is basically a way to move water up from one place to another. It is made up of a chain that has little cups attached to it. The chain goes around in a loop, with one end going down into the water and the other going up to where you want the water to go.

When you turn a crank or wheel, the chain starts to move. As the cups on the chain go down into the water, they scoop up some water and carry it along with them. When they get to the top, the cups tip over and pour the water out. This lets the water flow out into a trough or some other container.

Then, as the chain keeps moving, the cups go back down into the water and scoop up more. This process keeps repeating, which means that the chain keeps moving and the water keeps getting pumped up.

Chain pumps were used a long time ago in places where people needed to get water from a well or a river up to their farm or home. They were a really handy way to do this without having to use a lot of energy or move heavy buckets of water. Nowadays, we use other types of pumps that are powered by electricity or gas, but chain pumps are still used in some parts of the world where power is scarce.
