ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was a scientist who lived a long time ago. He made an important discovery about animals which has changed the way we think about them today.

Darwin observed that animals have different traits and characteristics, and he realized that these traits can be passed down from parents to their children. This means that some animals can be born with traits and characteristics that help them survive better, and those traits can be passed down from one generation to the next. This process is called "evolution".

Evolution helps explain why some animals look different depending where they live, and why traits and characteristics (like wings) can be passed on from one generation to the next. Darwin's theory of evolution also explains why some animals look similar to each other - they are related, and so have similar traits as their ancestors.

Charles Darwin's ideas were revolutionary for his time, and his work on evolution and natural selection continues to shape our understanding of the natural world today.
