ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Checkmate

Okay, so let's say you are playing a game with a friend called chess. In chess, there are different pieces with different powers that can move in different ways on a board with black and white squares.

One of the pieces is called the king, which is the most important piece in the game because if you capture it, you win. But there is also something called checkmate which means you win the game.

Checkmate happens when the opponent's king is trapped and cannot move anywhere safe from capture. This means if you were playing against your friend, you have cornered their king from all sides that there is nowhere to go. When that happens, your friend must say "I am in checkmate" and the game is over.

It's like playing hide and seek, but you have found your friend and they cannot run away, so you win the game. In the same way in chess, if you corner the opponent's king you win the game.

So, the key to winning in chess is to get the king trapped in checkmate. You have to use different pieces and strategies carefully to get the king to a point where it is trapped from all angles.

And that’s how you get checkmate!
