Chernobyl New Safe Confinement

Okay, let's imagine that you have a toy car and you accidentally crash it into a wall, and it breaks. You can't play with it anymore because it's not safe or good for you. Now, imagine that something like that happened at a really big place where people make electricity, called a power plant. This place is called Chernobyl, and there was a big accident there a long time ago.

When the accident happened, it was like the toy car crashing into the wall, but much much worse. A lot of bad things came out of the power plant and it made the air, water and land around Chernobyl very dangerous for people and animals to live in. The people who worked at the power plant and the people who lived nearby needed to leave and never come back.

Now, after many years, some very smart people have come up with a way to make things safer again. They've made a big cover, like a giant umbrella, that fits over the old, broken building where the accident happened. This big cover is called the "New Safe Confinement."

The New Safe Confinement is like putting a bandage on a cut. It covers up the old building and makes sure no more bad things can come out. It's made of very strong metal and it's very big - 150 metres wide and 257 metres long! That's as big as three football fields put together. The cover was built far away and then moved to Chernobyl, like when you build a really big puzzle and then move the finished puzzle to a different place.

Now that the New Safe Confinement is in place, people can safely work on cleaning up the area around Chernobyl. This will take a very long time, but with the New Safe Confinement in place, everyone can be sure that they are safe while they do it.
