ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chimera (biology)

Imagine you have a big lego set that you can use to build lots of different things. Now, let's imagine that you take some of the lego pieces from one set and mix them up with some of the pieces from another set. You end up with a new lego creation that has some parts that come from one set and some parts that come from the other set.

In biology, a chimera is kind of like a lego creation made up of parts from different organisms. However, instead of lego pieces, we're talking about cells. A chimera is an organism that has cells from two different organisms.

For example, let's imagine that you have a cat that needs a bone marrow transplant. The bone marrow makes new blood cells, so if the cat's bone marrow isn't healthy, it can make the cat very sick. In some cases, a healthy cat can donate some of its bone marrow to help the sick cat.

After the transplant, the sick cat will have some cells from the donor cat mixed in with its own cells. This means the sick cat will be a chimera. It will have some cells that are 100% cat and some cells that have a mix of cat and donor cat cells.

Chimeras can occur naturally too. For example, identical twins can sometimes form a chimera if they share a placenta while in the womb. Sometimes, the cells from one twin get mixed up with the cells from the other twin, leading to a mix of cells in the twins' bodies.

Overall, a chimera is a living thing made up of cells from two different organisms. It's kind of like a lego creation made from two different lego sets!
