ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chimera (genetics)

Hey kiddo, have you ever read or watched stories about creatures with different parts of different animals? Like a lion's body with an eagle's head, or a horse with a dragon's wings? Well, chimeras in genetics are kinda like that too!

You know how we have genes that decide how we look or what traits we have, like hair and eye color? These genes are like instructions for our body. In chimeras, these instructions get mixed up, just like mixing different colors of playdough.

Sometimes, when an animal is still in its mommy's belly, two embryos can fuse together and become one. This fusion creates a chimera, which means that the animal has two different sets of DNA! It's like two different people living in the same body.

Because of this, chimeras can have different colors or patterns on different parts of their body. For example, a cat might have black fur on one side and white on the other because of the different DNA from each embryo.

But don't worry, chimeras are not monsters or anything like that. They are just like any other animals, and most of the time you would never even know they are chimeras! It's just a cool little genetic quirk.
