Civilising mission

The civilising mission was a philosophy that some people had in the past. They thought that they were better than people from other countries and cultures, and that by trying to make those countries and cultures more like their own, they were actually helping those people out. They thought that by taking over another country and introducing their own beliefs and customs, they were 'civilising' them, meaning making them more polite, educated, orderly and fair. However, many people believe that this was actually a way for more powerful countries to take over weaker ones, and take their land and resources, rather than actually helping them out.
