ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cognitive informatics

Cognitive informatics is like a special helper for our brains, just like a toy car that can help us move faster or a calculator that can help us with math problems. It helps us understand how our brains work and how computers can work like our brains.

When we think about things, our brains use a lot of information to come up with an answer. This information can be things we see, hear, touch or feel. It's like a big puzzle piece that our brain puts together to get an answer. Cognitive informatics looks at how our brains do this and how we can teach a computer to do it too.

Imagine you are trying to teach a computer to recognize things. You can tell it to look for certain features of an object and then compare it to other objects to see if they are the same. This is called pattern recognition. Just like when we learn to recognize our family members' faces or our favorite toys, computers can learn to recognize things too.

Cognitive informatics also looks at how we make decisions. Our brain weighs a lot of factors like past experiences, emotions, and logic before coming up with an answer. Just like how we learn from our experiences to make better decisions in the future, computers can learn too.

Overall, cognitive informatics helps us understand how our brains work and how we can use technology to work like our brains. It's like having a secret helper to make our lives easier!
