ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

College admissions in the United States

Okay, so you know how you have to take lots of tests in school and get good grades to show that you know lots of things? Well, when you want to go to college, you have to do even more of that.

There are lots of different colleges all over the country, and they all want the best students to come to their school. That means that they want students who get good grades in school, do lots of extra activities like sports or clubs, and have special talents like playing an instrument or speaking another language.

When you want to apply to college, you have to show them who you are and why you would be a good fit at their school. That means you have to fill out a big application that asks lots of questions about you, your grades, and what you like to do.

Some colleges also require you to take special tests like the SAT or ACT to see how well you can do on a big test. This helps them figure out how well you might do in college.

After you apply, the people who work at the college will read your application and decide if they want to let you come to their school. They will look at everything you sent them, including your grades, test scores, and what you wrote in your application.

It can be really tough to get into some colleges, because there are lots of other students who also want to go there. But don't worry - there are plenty of other great schools out there that would love to have you as a student.
