ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Color constancy

Hey there! Do you know what color constancy is? It's when you see a color as the same no matter what light it's in. Let me explain it to you like you're 5 years old.

Imagine you have a red ball. You can see it's red no matter if you're in a bright room or a dark room. Now, let's say you take that red ball outside into the sunlight. Did you notice how the red ball looks a little different now? It might look a little more shiny or brighter than it did inside. But even though it looks different, you still know it's a red ball.

That's color constancy! Your brain knows that even though the light is different outside, the ball is still red. The color of the ball doesn't change just because the light is different.

This happens all the time without you realizing it. When you see a blue shirt in your room, and then you see it in the sunshine, you'll notice the color looks different but you'll still know it's a blue shirt.

Your brain is really good at understanding what colors should look like, no matter what kind of light they're under. Color constancy helps you understand the world around you better, and it makes it easier to recognize things even if the light changes.
