Shadow and highlight enhancement

Okay kiddo, so when we look at a picture, sometimes we notice that some parts of it are really dark and hard to see, while other parts are really bright and washed out. Shadow and highlight enhancement is a way to make those dark parts a little brighter and the bright parts a little darker, so we can see everything better.

Think about a coloring book page, where the lines are really dark and the spaces in between are really light. If we used a black crayon to color everything, we wouldn't be able to see where the lines are anymore. But if we used a gray crayon to color the light spaces and a white crayon to color the really bright spaces, we could still see the lines and everything would look more balanced.

That's kind of like what shadow and highlight enhancement does for a picture. It brightens up the dark parts and darkens the bright parts, so everything is easier to see and looks nicer overall. It's like coloring with different shades of crayon, but instead of doing it by hand, we use a computer program to do it for us.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
