ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tone mapping

Ok kiddo, imagine you went to the park and took a picture of your friend sitting on a bench. Now imagine that the sun was really bright and your friend looks really dark in the photo. That's because the camera's sensors can't capture all the brightness and darkness at the same time.

Now we use something called tone mapping to make your photo look better. It's like when you draw a picture and color it with colors that make it look more real. Tone mapping helps us make the picture look more like what we saw in real life.

So, tone mapping is when we adjust the brightness and darkness in different parts of a photo to make it look better. We can make the dark parts brighter and the bright parts darker so that everything looks more balanced. It's like when you're coloring and you try to make sure everything is the right color, not too light or too dark.

There are different ways to tone map a photo, but they all help adjust the brightness and darkness so that the photo looks better. And that's how we can make a picture look closer to what our eyes see in real life!
