ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gamma correction

Have you ever tried to color on a piece of paper and the colors didn't look exactly like what you wanted them to be? That's kind of like what happens with screens and pictures. Sometimes the colors on a screen don't look exactly like the colors in real life.

This is where gamma correction comes in. Gamma correction is a way to make sure that the colors on a screen look more like the colors in real life.

Here's an example: Imagine you're having a party and you want to decorate the room with some balloons. But the balloons you bought look different in the store than they do in your party room because the lighting is different. To make the balloons look the same in both places, you might decide to buy some extra balloons to bring in more color or use different lights to make them look better.

Gamma correction works similarly to this by adjusting the brightness levels of a picture to make the colors look more accurate. It's a way of fine-tuning the colors on a screen so that they match what we see in real life.

So next time you see a really pretty picture on your computer or phone, you can thank gamma correction for helping to make it look just right!
