ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Consent (criminal law)

Consent is a word that means you have agreed to something. In criminal law, it means that you have said yes to someone doing something specific to you, and that person is allowed to do that thing. And when we say "something specific," we mean something like touching you, kissing you, or having sex with you.

For example, if you are playing with a toy, and your friend wants to play with it too, they need to ask you if it's okay. If you say yes, then they have your consent, and they are allowed to play with the toy. But if you say no, they can't play with your toy, and if they do, it's wrong.

Now when it comes to adults, there are some specific things that you are not allowed to do without someone's consent, like touch them inappropriately or have sex with them against their will. If someone tries to do these things without getting the other person's consent, it can be a crime.

That's why it's important to make sure that you always ask someone if it's okay before you do something to them that could be considered a crime. And if someone says no, then you have to respect their decision and not do it. That means that you should only ever touch or have sex with someone if they say yes and give you their consent.
