ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Converso

A converso is a person who changed their religion. It typically refers to Jewish people in Spain and Portugal during the late Middle Ages who converted to Christianity because of religious persecution.

To help understand it better, let's imagine that you have a favorite color, let's say blue. But, everyone in your town says that blue is a bad color and they start to be mean to you because of it. So, you decide to start saying that your favorite color is green, even though you still really like blue.

This is similar to what happened with the Jewish people in Spain and Portugal, who were being mistreated because of their religion. Many of them started saying that they were now Christians, even though they still believed in their Jewish faith in secret.

This was called being a "converso". It was a difficult and often dangerous decision to make, but many people did it to protect themselves and their families.

It's important to remember that people should be allowed to believe and practice their religion without fear of being mistreated.
