Coolgardie safe

Have you ever been out in the sunshine and felt really hot? Well, if you lived a long time ago before we had fancy fridges and air conditioning, you would have to find ways to keep your food and drinks cool too! One way people did this was by using a Coolgardie Safe.

A Coolgardie Safe is made up of two parts - a wooden frame with mesh sides, and a metal tray. The mesh sides allow air to flow inside the safe, keeping the food and drinks cool. The metal tray is placed inside the safe and filled with water. As the air flows through the mesh and over the wet tray, it cools down, just like when you feel a breeze on a hot day.

People in Australia in the 19th century used Coolgardie Safes a lot because it gets really hot there. They would put their food and drinks like meat, bread, milk, and veggies inside the safe to keep them cool and fresh for a little bit longer.

So, the Coolgardie Safe is like a special cupboard that helps to keep your food and drinks fresh by circulating cool air around them. Now, you know how people kept their food and drinks cool before we had electricity to power fridges and air conditioners!
