ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Copula (linguistics)

In linguistics, sometimes we want to connect words together to show how they are related. Think of it like when you connect the dots on a picture to make a complete image. One way we do this is with something called a copula. A copula is kind of like a bridge that connects two words together in a sentence.

For example, let's say you want to say "I am happy." The word "am" is the copula here because it connects the two words "I" and "happy" to make a complete sentence. Another example could be "She seems tired." The word "seems" is the copula in this sentence because it connects "she" and "tired."

So, a copula is a very important word in a sentence because it helps us connect different parts of what we are trying to say. It may seem small, but without a copula, our sentences wouldn't make much sense at all!
