ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Coupling (piping)

Coupling in piping is like putting two puzzle pieces together. Imagine you have two puzzle pieces – one is a mommy puzzle piece and the other is a baby puzzle piece. The mommy piece has a hole and the baby piece has a stick that looks like a tail.

To connect the two pieces, you need to insert the tail of the baby piece into the hole of the mommy piece. This way, the two puzzle pieces will become one big piece. It is just like coupling.

In piping, there are two pipe sections (like the puzzle pieces) that need to be connected together. The coupling (like the mommy and baby pieces) has a hole (like the mommy piece) and a thread (like the baby piece tail).

You need to put one pipe section into one end of the coupling and the other pipe section into the other end. Then, you tighten the coupling with a wrench so that the threads lock the two sections together. This creates a strong and leak-free connection between the two pipes.

Couplings come in different sizes and types, like mommy pieces and baby pieces. Some have threads on both ends, while others have a threaded end and a plain end. Regardless of its shape and size, the purpose of a coupling is always the same – to join two sections of pipe together so that water or other fluids can flow from one place to another.
