ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Covenant of the pieces

Okay kiddo, imagine you and your friend make a really special promise to each other. You promise to always be there for each other, help each other out, and stick together no matter what. This promise is really important to both of you, and you want to make sure that you never forget it.

Now imagine this same kind of promise, but between two really important people a long, long time ago. These people were named God and Abraham. God promised to take care of Abraham and his family, and give them a special land to live in. Abraham promised to always worship and obey God.

But how could they make sure they never forgot this promise? That's where the Covenant of the Pieces comes in. They sacrificed some animals, cut them in half, and laid them out on the ground. Then they walked between the pieces, which was like saying "if I don't keep my promise, let what happened to these animals happen to me".

It might sound weird to us today, but in those times it was a really serious way of making a promise that you would never break. And God and Abraham knew that they could trust each other and always remember this special promise, because they had done this special ceremony.
