Craig v. Boren

Craig v. Boren was a court case that happened a long time ago in the United States. It was about a law that said it was legal for girls to buy beer at the age of 18, but boys had to wait until they were 21. This law made some people upset because they thought it was not fair.

So, a man named Craig decided to take the case to court - this means he asked a group of judges to decide whether the law was fair or not. Craig argued that the law discriminated against boys because it treated them differently than girls for no good reason. The government (the people who made the law) argued that the law was necessary to protect girls from the dangers of alcohol.

The judges listened to both sides and thought very, very hard about what to do. They finally decided that the law was not fair, because there was no good evidence that girls were less likely to get hurt from alcohol than boys were. They also said that it was not fair to treat people differently just because of their gender (whether they are a boy or a girl).

This court case helped people understand that it is not okay to treat people differently based on their gender. It was an important step towards making sure that everyone is treated equally and fairly in the United States.
