ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crime rate

Ok kiddo, imagine you have a big jar of marbles. Each marble represents a crime that somebody committed. The more marbles in the jar, the higher the crime rate is.

Now let's say you have another jar filled with smaller marbles. Each one of those little marbles represents a person in your town or city. If there are a lot of marbles in that jar, that means there are a lot of people in your town or city.

So, when people talk about crime rate, they're really talking about how many marbles are in the jar compared to how many people are in the other jar. If there are more marbles in the crime jar than there are people in the town jar, that means the crime rate is high. That's not good!

But, if there are fewer marbles in the crime jar and more people in the town jar, that means the crime rate is low. That's much better!

So, people who study this stuff will look at how many different kinds of crimes are happening in the town, like stealing or hurting someone, and compare it to how many people live there. That's what they mean when they talk about the crime rate.
