ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cryostasis (clathrate hydrates)

Cryostasis is when something is frozen at a super-duper cold temperature, kinda like when you put your ice cream in the freezer. But, instead of ice cream, scientists freeze gases that are found in the ocean floor (salty water). These gases get trapped inside something called clathrate hydrates, which are tiny cages made of ice. Think of it like a Lego castle made of ice, where the gases are the Legos inside.

Scientists use cryostasis to store these gases so they don't escape into the air and make the earth warmer. They think there is a lot of these gases in the ocean floor, and they want to keep them there. So, they put them in cryostasis to keep the gases frozen and trapped inside the cages. Just like how you keep your ice cream frozen so it doesn't melt!
